For one month in spring 2023, ASIAN(SOUND)SCAPES moved into Ponsonby Social Club — eleven ticketed nights, every Thursday to Saturday of October, doors at seven and shows at eight.
The season ran the full breadth of the kaupapa: jazz royalty (Umar Zakaria’s Fearless Music fifth-anniversary show), club nights and DJ bills, indie and dream-pop (Phoebe Rings, Goodspace), classical Indian fusion (RaagTime), a Beatles tribute, and a full Asian Comedy Takeover MC’d by Jess Karamjeet. Bilingual billing ran throughout — 紅音, 二沙岛, 飞林, 王国豪, 张雨清, 夏露, 鬼打樣 — under the roaring-tiger key art that gave the season its face.
Downstairs, NANAM × The Strawberry Pig ran a month-long Modern Filipino kitchen pop-up, feeding the room before every show.
A few of the acts, in the season’s own words: Goodspace — the solo project of Jefferson Chen, an indie rock outfit “blending multiple genres” with influences from Radiohead to André 3000. Club Ruby — “an engaging musical collective that unites Club Members of all ages through their love for juicy indie rock/pop punk tunes with a hidden theatrical twist.” Geoff Ong — “thoughtful, introspective pop music that still makes you want to groove your butt off.”
